      <title>Introduction</title>
<p>During the last Ice Age, all of Iceland was covered with ice. The coldest period was 25 k years ago, when the extent of the ice cover in Iceland was up to 100 nautical miles off the present coastline (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B4">Geirsdóttir et al. 2009</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B5">2013</xref>), indicating no ice-free areas on the island. The Ice Age ended abruptly 11 k years ago, when the temperature rose from severe coldness in the North Atlantic islands to a climate warmer than today in a few decades (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B2">Dansgaard et al. 1993</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B5">Geirsdóttir et al. 2013</xref>). No terrestrial or freshwater life could have survived this condition, except for two subterraneous groundwater amphipod species (Kristjánsson and Svavarsson 2007). The present <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="order">Trichoptera</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> fauna is therefore post-glacial.</p>
<p>The first comprehensive survey on insects in Iceland was made in the late 1920s, where new and older insect records were published (Lindroth 1931). Ten species of <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="order">Trichoptera</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> were recorded. Only one additional study was made when <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="order">Trichoptera</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> were collected (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B1">Anderson and Falk 1935</xref>) with no additional species recorded. Therefore, when Fristup (1942) published his annotated checklist of <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="order">Trichoptera</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> of Iceland, 10 species were known.</p>

<p>The main objective of this study was to estimate the dispersal and exponential rate of the two recent <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="order">Trichoptera</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> species that have colonised Iceland. This was achieved by following their population growth from the time they were first recorded and, thereby, gives us a good picture of their establishment in each area.</p>

      <title>Discussion</title>
<p>Iceland is still in the process of post-glacial colonisation by insects. By 1931, ten species of <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="order">Trichoptera</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> were known from Iceland. It is unlikely that large species of <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="order">Trichoptera</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>, like <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Potamophylax">P.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="cingulatus">cingulatus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> or <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Micropterna">M.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="sequax">sequax</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> could have escaped the notice of entomologists, who sampled small caddisfly species as <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Apatania">A.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="zonella">zonella</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>, which had been replaced by <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Potamophylax">P.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="cingulatus">cingulatus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> in the streams in the north-east and east in 1974–1978 by predation (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B8">Gíslason 1981b</xref>). Analysis of geographic variation in the COI mtDNA barcode marker in <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="order">Trichoptera</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> species from Iceland indicates distinct histories where different species show indication of varying times since colonisation of the island and separate evolution restricted to Iceland (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B9">Gíslason and Pálsson 2020</xref>; unpublished data). Originating from the Palaearctic, <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Potamophylax">P.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="cingulatus">cingulatus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> showed no variation in the Icelandic population (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B10">Gíslason et al. 2015</xref>). Its possible migration route could be traced by COI mtDNA sequence from central Europe during the Ice Age, towards western France and north to Britain and onwards to the Faroe Islands and Iceland, a colonisation that presumably took place in the mid-20th century. <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Micropterna">Micropterna</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="sequax">sequax</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> was misidentified as <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Micropterna">M.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="lateralis">lateralis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> in 2010 when it was first recorded (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B17">Ólafsson and Gíslason 2010</xref>). The identification was based on the keys and illustrations by <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B14">Macan (1973)</xref> and McLachlan (1874–1890). A specimen of the <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Micropterna">Micropterna</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> species in Iceland was sent to BOLD (<ext-link xlink:href="http://www.boldsystems.org/index.php/Public_RecordView?processid=ICEFI001-17" ext-link-type="uri" xlink:type="simple">ICEFI001-17</ext-link>.COI-5P). It turned out to be 92% related to <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Micropterna">M.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="lateralis">lateralis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> and 98.7–99.9% related to <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Micropterna">M.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="sequax">sequax</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> populations in northern Europe (Snaebjörn Pálsson, pers. com). This led to revision of the identification and all specimens of <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Micropterna">Micropterna</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> in the Icelandic Institute of Natural History with the aid of the illustrated key by <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B20">Tobias and Tobias (2023)</xref>. <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Micropterna">Micropterna</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="sequax">sequax</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> did not show any variation in COI mDNA, indicating a recent colonisation. The dispersal rate of <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Potamophylax">P.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="cingulatus">cingulatus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> within Iceland was 7–9 km/year over a period of 30 years, dispersed all over the lowlands of Iceland, an area twice larger than its distribution in 1974–1978. <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Micropterna">Micropterna</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="sequax">sequax</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> is such a recent coloniser that its dispersal has only been 40 km since its first record in 2008, a dispersal rate of 4 km/year.</p>
<p>When a recent species has established itself in an area, its population grows at an exponential rate in the area and when it has established itself, it disperses fast. It will be interesting to follow the population growth of these species until they have reached their population size limit. Other <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="order">Trichoptera</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> species in the traps have kept a relatively constant catch over the years.</p>
<p>The close similarity of the mtDNA sequences within these two species and no distinct lineage from European population suggest that the post-glacial colonisation is still ongoing, which is supported by the observed and tracked colonisation of two out of 12 species in Iceland during the last 70 years.</p>

      <title>Conclusions</title>
<p>It is possible to conclude from this that, when species establish a population on a large island like Iceland, the population builds up exponentially and, when it has established itself, it disperses fast. For <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Potamophylax">P.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="cingulatus">cingulatus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>, the dispersal rate was about 7–9 km/year, but the dispersal rate for the more recent settler <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Micropterna">M.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="sequax">sequax</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> is 4 km/year. The colonisation of these two species shows presumably that post-glacial colonisation by insects is still in progress in Iceland.</p>
